Competitions

There are many opportunities throughout the year to enter competitions if you wish. These include:

  • PUMA Southern Championships
  • PUMA Northern Championships
  • PUMA English Championships
  • PUMA Childrens Competition
  • PUMA British Championships
  • New Century Tae Kwon-Do Christmas Competition

In order to enter a competition you will need to complete the Student Competition form which can be downloaded in the Member Area. Or ask in club for a form.

There are many events which you can choose to enter, such as:

  • Patterns
  • Sparring
  • High Kick
  • Little PUMA's Drill
  • Bo Staff
  • Musical Patterns

Where possible you will usually compete against people of a similar grade, weight/height and gender.

The next competition is the PUMA Norther Championships on Saturday 27th March 2010.

High Kicking

High Kicking is only open to Junior students and Little PUMA's.

For High Kicking, students are split into groups depending on their height.

Heights are taken on the day to ensure proper grouping of students.

All junior grades compete together. Little PUMA's compete together.

Technique etc will be explained to each student on the day prior to competing.

Little PUMA's Only Events

Competition Drill - Little PUMA's now have their own specific competition drill to learn and perform at competitions.

Top Draw - Each Little PUMA is to draw a picture and bring it along to the tournament and hand it in to Master Gayle at the top table. There will be medals for the best three pictures - Gold, Silver, Bronze. Please ensure that you put your name, age and PUMA school on the back of the picture.

Musical Patterns

Students who wish to enter the musical pattern section should be aware of the following criteria.

The division is open to all grades, Junior and Adult.

Students have the choice to either use a weapon or empty hand (see below).

The pattern should be no longer than 45 seconds.

  • Each competitor must provide their own music on CD format only. 1 track only on the CD please.
  • Only nunchaku and bo staff are allowed as weapons.
  • Students should apply to do a musical pattern through their instructor, the application should be put on a separate sheet or paper stating name, grade, school.

Traditional Patterns

Boys and Girls in all the peewee divisions will compete together, all other junior sparring and pattern divisions, boys and girls will compete separately.

Junior boys and girls black belts will compete in one division.

Adult male and female black belts will compete in one division. Please note that in the final or the Black belt patterns, there will be one optional pattern and one designated pattern.

All other students will be split into groups where possible based on their belt colour, this will be as follows:

Belt Group Will Perform
Junior White, Junior Purple Stripes, Junior Orange Stripes and Junior Yellow Stripes Sajo Jirugi or Sajo Makgi (9th Kup can perform Chon Ji)
Adult White and Adult Yellow Stripes Sajo Jirugi or Sajo Makgi (9th Kup can perform Chon Ji)
Yellow Belt and Green Stripes Chon Ji or Dan Gun
Green Belt and Blue Stripes Do San or Won Hyo
Blue Belt and Red Stripes Yul Gok or Joong Gun
Red Belt and Black Stripes Toi Gye or Hwa Rang
Black Belts (all degrees) A pattern applicable to their grade (or highest known pattern)

Sparring

FULL OFFICIAL PUMA SPARRING EQUIPMENT MUST BE WORN AND NO JEWELLERY

Yellow and Green belt groups (up to and including 5th Kup) will perform Point Stop Sparring. For full rules etc please see your Instructor

Blue belt groups and above (4th Kup and above) will perform Continuous Sparring. For full rules etc please see your Instructor

Divisions - All students will be split into groups where possible based on their belt colour, this will be as follows:

  • Little PUMA's, Purple, Orange and Yellow Stripes (Will Not be allowed to spar)
  • Yellow Belt and Green Stripes
  • Green Belt and Blue Stripes
  • Blue Belt and Red Stripes
  • Red Belt and Black Stripes
  • Black belts - all grades

Bo Staff/Jang Bong

To compete in competition Bo Staff events, all students must have attended Bo Staff seminars and passed the appropriate levels required to perform the Bo Staff patterns.

The levels that need to be passed to perform each pattern are:

Level 2 = Pattern 1
Level 4 = Pattern 2
Level 6 = Pattern 3
Level 7 = Demo Pattern 1
Level 8 = Demo Pattern 2

Please ensure you have passed the relevant level and indicate on your entry form the pattern that you wish to perform.

This division will be split into Junior and Adult groups.

Two competitors will compete at the same time, the successful competitor will progress to the next round.

Competitors can choose from Bo Form 1, 2, 3, Demo Pattern 1 or Demo Pattern 2.

Please remember to put "Bo" in the weapons column of your competition entry form.

Destruction

Destruction is only open to students aged 16 and over.

Students will be split into groups for Destruction, by gender and where possible also by their belt colour.

Destruction is split into the following disciplines by gender

  • Board Hand
  • Board Foot
  • Tile Hand
  • Brick Hand

For the technique required for each discipline, please check the relevant information for each competition.

Students are allowed to compete in more than 1 destruction event, please note that an additional fee is required for each separate destruction category.














Tae Kwon-Do

Tae Kwon-Do is the scientific use of the body in the method of self defence. A body that has gained the ultimate use of it's facilities through physical and mental training. Tae Kwon-Do will improve your flexibility, strengthen your body, help channel agressions and reduce overall stress.

Where & When

Training usually takes place at Brookfield Community School, Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield on Mondays and Wednesdays.

History

General Choi Hong Hi Black Belt, 9th Degree 1918-2002

General Choi founded Tae Kwon-Do in 1955 and it is now the worlds most popular martial art.

Tae Kwon-Do literally means 'The way of the foot and fist'.
