A Year In Review by Master Gayle

Posted on 05/01/2011

What a great year for P.U.M.A. martial arts. 2010 had many highlights. It’s always good to look back at the past year because it gives us so much to look forward to in the coming year. Although I don’t like living in the past it is important to know that we are still moving forward, that means looking back at the things we’ve achieved and mention some of the highlights in the past year.

Here are just a few I’d like mention:

  • Lots of new degree grades
  • New Schools
  • P.U.M.A. team gets stronger with more tournament success
  • Master Black promotion
  • A lady 5th degree
  • Ghana is getting a dojang
  • Lands End to John O’Groats
  • The sun shines at summer camp

1. Lots of new degree grades.

It’s really great to see so many students achieve new degree grades. 2010 saw over 150 students promoted to a new degree. Just to show how important getting a new degree is, all but 5 of the students that took a degree grading, came to the presentation evening. I’m really looking forward to welcoming more new degree grades in 2011.

2. New P.U.M.A. Schools

2010 was a fantastic year for new P.U.M.A. Schools. We had over 15 new Schools open during 2010. It just goes to show that P.U.M.A. is still growing. The best thing about all the new Schools is; instructors who have grown up with P.U.M.A. martial arts opened them. In my opinion growing from within is the best type of growth. There are at least three Schools opening in January 2011, so the growth is still continuing.

3. P.U.M.A squad kicks it again!

The P.U.M.A. squad has continued to prove that we can compete with the best in the world. The Squad were victorious on many occasions with some real quality performances. During the year we hosted the Canadian team at the ICTF intercontinental tournament championships in Swindon. Everyone that watched the tournament would agree that all the PUMA competitors competed with great spirit and all P.U.M.A. squad members gave a good account of themselves.

I had the pleasure to watch our squad in the Irish Championships, held late in the year in Cork. That was a real treat for me, I don’t often get to sit and watch the team perform. I was treated to a display of great sportsmanship and incredible skill from the P.U.M.A. elite. Well done to Mr Lammin and his coaching team. Can’t wait until Cork 2011.

4. Master Black is an 8th Degree

Master Black has been involved with martial arts for many years, so it was good to see that recognised in front of so many people during the ICTF Championship. I would like to wish Master Black all the best in 2011 and hope that he has a great year as an 8th degree, only one more to go Master Black.

5. P.U.M.A. gets a Lady 5th degree

At long last P.U.M.A. now has a lady 5th degree. Ms Katy Carr was dragged kicking and screaming into her grading but she did admit afterwards, that she enjoyed every minute of it.

6. Ghana gets a dojang

Work has started on the Ghana dojang project. With the help of P.U.M.A. martial arts the Ghana TKD association has started building their new dojang and with our continuing support in 2011, we hope to see the project completed. I shall be visiting Ghana during 2011 to see how things are progressing. The dojang will serve as a centre of training for many students throughout the West Africa region. I’d like to personally thank all of you for your support.

7. Lands end to John O’Groats

Early in 2011 a group of highly tuned athletes will be cycling form Lands End to John O’Groats. Some of us P.U.M.A. instructors will also be doing it. We are hoping to raise lots of cash for three worthy causes. If you haven’t heard about it then speak to your instructor and make a donation now.

8. The sun shines at camp 2010

All I can say is you had to be there, if you weren’t, make sure you’re there in 2011, apparently the sun will be shining again.

That’s it for looking back, it’s now time to look forward to the New Year. I hope you all have a great New Year and I look forward to serving you all in 2011.

Regards
Master Ray Gayle
